Quo Vidas?

I think I've mentioned before that while at the Catholic Media Conference in March, I met Dr. Eugene Gan. He is one of the most innovative thinkers in the area of Catholic Communications I have met. I had the chance to meet with him and hear some of his thoughts on the topics of "What is communication", "Living in a post literate society", and "the essentials of Catholic media". I was floored by his insights as well as his personal dynamism. He is just one of those people I could listen to all day.

I have been waiting eagerly for his dissertation entitled "Quo Vadis: An Integrated Direction for Catholic Media Technology Engagement". I emailed him and he sent me a link of where I can download it. I had intended to post this after completing at least one read of the dissertation, but me being a slow reader, and the fact that the work is a compelling read, I wanted to pass along the link as soon as possible. As far as I am concerned, this is a MUST read for all who are involved with Catholic media and for those who are Catholic involved in media.

The title of the Dr. Gan's work begins with the latin 'Quo Vidas' which I understand means 'Where are you going?'. So, the work is looking to lay the groundwork for an understanding of 'What is Catholic media?' as well as how a Catholic should engage or interact with media. I have been impressed with the foundations he has layed in the early part of his writings. He challenges the reader to ask what a Catholic world view is and how this should impact our lives (though specifically the area of education).

I have been surprised at how accessible Dr. Gan's writing is. While clearly a scholar his writing has a 'lightness' too it. He leads the reader through the material gently without trying to impress him with his knowledge. He writing expresses an extreme confidence, but not a hint of arrogance.

Well, enough effussion. Please read the dissertation, pass the link on to anyone who is involved in media (Catholic or otherwise) and then let's have a discussion about the content, direction, and scope of Catholic media.

I can't wait!
